2015 PADDLE FOR THE BAYS: RACE CAPE COD

2015 PADDLE FOR THE BAYS: RACE CAPE COD

WHAT:       PADDLE FOR THE BAYS: RACE CAPE COD

WHEN:       Saturday, September 17, 2016

Registration begins at 7:00 am, RACES begin at 9:30

WHERE:     Ropes Beach, 85 Old Shore Road, Cotuit, MA 02635

Join us at Ropes Beach in Cotuit, MA and join the RACE for clean water! Paddle on one of the most beautiful courses in New England. This RACE is a test of speed and endurance for Stand Up Paddle-boarders and Kayakers on courses of varying difficulty. All ages and levels of paddlers can compete in a spirited challenge on the beautiful waters of Barnstable's Three Bays.

This year we have added a relay team to the event. A team will consist of 4 racers who will use the same kayak/board. Each racer will go the distance of approximately 1/2 mile for a total of 2 miles.

Three Bays Preservation is also celebrating our 20th Anniversary! In honor of this feat, we would like to give you the choice of how to enter the RACE. You may pay the flat fee of $95.00 (Youth is $45.00) and enter the RACE. OR, you may partner with us and fundraise for the Bays and clean water research. When you register as a fundraiser, you will receive a fundraising page that you can customize to your liking. If you raise enough money to match or exceed your registration of $95.00, your fee will be waived. If you don't reach your goal, you'll be charged the difference. Don't worry, you don't have to fundraise, you can just register and pay the fee. Either way, we appreciate your support.

We have some amazing prizes for the top 3 fundraisers!!

This year we also have cash prizes for some of the Racers!!

Why do we hold this RACE?

People ask us all the time why we hold this RACE. The answer is simple. The waters of the Three Bays of Cotuit Bay, North Bay and West Bay along with the associated rivers, lakes, streams and inlets have become increasingly degraded over the years. We are seeing a major increase in the amount of nitrogen entering into our waterways, mostly from septic systems, road runoff and fertilizers. This increased nitrogen has caused an explosion of algae and aquatic plants growing in our bays. This growth depletes the oxygen levels in the water that slowly kills off fish and shellfish. We hold this RACE to bring awareness to our watershed. The number one comment we get from racers every year is that this is the most beautiful course ever! We want to insure that we leave these waters better for the generations following after us.

IF WE DON'T DO THIS, WHO WILL?

Please visit our website to read about the exciting projects we have undertaken in the past year. Not only will your fundraising efforts and support help us to bring back the pristine nature of the Three Bays, but our success with our projects can be replicated by other communities who face the same issues.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

Registration to the RACE also includes the Official RACE dinner with entertainment and door prizes. The dinner will be held at Veteran's Hall, Main Street in Osterville from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Friday, September 16th. Additional guests will be $25.00 for adults (12+) and $15.00 for kids under 12. If you want to bring a guest, please register them at the end of the sign up page.

The first 100 registrants will receive a long sleeved tee shirt.

Please pre-register, as the cost goes up the day of the RACE. Registration on September 17th will be $110.00 for adults and $55.00 for youth.

Cape Cod Wildlife Collaborative Festival

The Cape Cod Wildlife Collaborative is sponsoring its 7th Annual Cape Cod Wildlife Festival on Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, 345 Bone Hill Road in Cummaquid.

The festival showcases local environmental groups - both on land and in the water - all in one place, on one day, and free to the general public. It has evolved from a small event attended by 100 participants in 2010, to a larger affair attended by almost 400 annually. The festival features educational presentations featuring live animals, live music by the Gurus, local natural history authors signing and selling their books courtesy of Books by the Sea, wildlife photographers sharing their photography tips, delicious food vendors, and lots of environmentally themed, interactive activities for families.

This is a FREE event, but donations are greatly appreciated.

Our mission is: "Believing that wildlife has an intrinsic value to our region, the Cape Cod Wildlife Collaborative is a partnership of non-profit organizations committed to protecting wildlife through rescue, rehabilitation, science, advocacy, habitat conservation and education."

Members of the Collaborative are:

Barnstable Land Trust, Cape Wildlife Center, Center for Coastal Studies, Goldenrod Foundation, IFAW Marine Mammal Rescue & Research, Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, National Marine Life Center, Orenda Wildlife & Land Trust, Thornton W. Burgess Society, Three Bays Preservation, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, Wild Care, and Unity Cape Cod.

Herring Count Training Meeting

HERRING COUNT TRAINING MEETING

Have you ever wanted to volunteer and make a difference?  Here is your chance. Become a part of a worthwhile project and become a herring counter!

The population of the River Herring (Alewives and Blue Backed Herring) has decreased dramatically over the last several decades and the State of Massachusetts has established this program to document their numbers.  Join hundreds of other volunteers across the Commonwealth and count the herring!  It only takes a minimal amount of time and very little effort.  It's the perfect volunteer opportunity!

Join us on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 12:00 pm at Liberty Hall in Marstons Mills. We will explain the counting protocol (all of the scheduling and reporting is done online!) and we'll explain all there is to know about being a herring counter.  The herring are only here for a very short time, usually the end of March until mid-May.

When:                   Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 12:00 pm

Where:                  Liberty Hall, 2150 Main St., Marstons Mills, MA 02648
